The Story of 24 Lumber Lane
The property was purchased by Dr. Edgar Mulford in Late 1869 and construction began on the main house in 1873. The home was a wedding present for Dr. Mulford's new bride Mary Edwards of East Hampton. The couple bore three children and together provided medical care to the residents of Bridgehampton and the nearby villages.
Dr. Mulford practiced medicine out of the front office of the house for many years. During that time he was known to bottle and brew his own remedies. Many of the original medicine bottles have since been unearthed on the grounds. Dr. and Mrs. Mulford's descendants lived at Lumber Lane for 122 years.
The carriage barn was constructed shortly after the completion of the main house. It was originally intended to contain the doctor's horse-and-carriage but was revamped around the turn of the century to accommodate his 1901 Stanley Steamer, one of the first automobiles in Bridgehampton, which the doctor used in his later years to visit patients.
The chestnut tree in the back garden pre-dates the property and is rumored to be the last of a large chestnut grove that grew in the surrounding area. A recent test has proven it to be well over 275 years old.
In the mid-1990s, the current owners purchased the home and began a 15-year restoration project that has enhanced the property and brought it to its present beauty. The home has since hosted many artistic and charismatic characters and has proudly maintained its place in Bridgehampton history.
